Timeline

Sept 2022 - Apr 2023

Team

3 UX Designers

The Special collections department helps facilitate discovery and fosters public engagement with distinct and culturally significant materials. In collaboration with 3 other UX Designers, we helped Boston Public Library address the lack of consistency across multiple platforms and make materials more accessible to patrons.

The problem

Boston public library patrons must navigate through multiple platforms to search for Special Collections items. There is a lack of consistency and clarity between the website and discover platforms which has made it hard to find and request materials. Familiar and unfamiliar patrons need a way to easily navigate the website and multiple discovery platforms bother remotely and in-person through requests.

The solution

An enhanced Special Collections site that incorporates iconography, updated visuals, and improved information hierarchy.

Impact:

  1. +75% of people successfully navigated to the Search & Discover page finding the discovery tools
  2. +88% of people successfully navigated to the Reading room page and made an appointment
  3. Overall, BPL patrons were able to better explore, find, and discover Special Collections materials
